天保2年（1831年）、第27代島津氏当主である島津斉興公は、温泉別館を二月田のこの地に移した。以後、第28代当主の斉彬公ら歴代の島津氏当主がここを温泉別館としたため、人々から「殿様湯」と呼ばれるようになった。敷地にある浴槽跡、庭園や八幡宮・湯権現の社殿は、いずれも温泉別館時代のものである。
